**California: **A 38-year-old Indian-origin woman, Shalini Thakur, was shot dead outside a Panera Bread restaurant in Sacramento, California, allegedly by a 22-year-old man identified as Rohit. According to the reported details, Rohit had repeatedly followed and harassed Shalini and had allegedly sought to marry her. After the shooting, he died by suicide in front of police on Highway 50.

Shalini, who worked at the restaurant, had arrived at her workplace on Tuesday afternoon. According to eyewitness accounts cited in reports, Rohit followed her to the restaurant, stopped her outside and opened fire with a gun. Shalini fell to the ground after being shot. Reports said the suspect then fired at her head from close range.

The killing was reportedly planned over a long period, with the suspect allegedly monitoring Shalini's movements. Shalini had previously approached police over the repeated harassment and had obtained a court order restricting Rohit from going to her workplace or home. Reports said Shalini first became acquainted with Rohit when he delivered food and other items that she had ordered online. She reportedly approached police after finding his behaviour disturbing. Rohit allegedly continued visiting her home and waiting outside for hours. Reports also said he was unhappy with Shalini interacting closely with other people and allegedly attempted to control her movements.

Suspect Dies After Police Begin Pursuit

The shooting reportedly took place at around 3 p.m. local time. Witnesses said Shalini attempted to run away after Rohit approached her, but he allegedly stopped her and opened fire.

Witnesses provided police with information about the vehicle Rohit was using. Police reportedly located the vehicle through an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system. Rohit then stopped on Highway 50 and, according to the report, shot himself in front of police after apparently realising that he could not escape.Authorities said Rohit had been living in California without legal documentation. They also said he had previously been detained in Arizona.
